The CAS in Arbitration
The Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) program is a 10 ECTS credit point joint degree of the University of Lucerne and the University of Neuchâtel in cooperation with the Swiss Arbitration Academy.
The CAS in Arbitration is the first program that combines an in-depth academic education with the practical insight provided by a large number of international practitioners. This sophisticated program demands in-depth preparation from the participant for each session and active participation during the course, which includes pleading training on the basis of mock cases, role plays of arbitration-related scenarios, drafting sessions to learn how to draft written submissions and interactive discussions on cutting-edge arbitration topics.
All four modules start on a Thursday morning and end on a Monday night. The course stretches from April to January of the following year. The next course will start in April 2016. All courses are taught in English. This course is designed to accommodate working professionals, participants will be given an opportunity to attend to their professional responsibilities during each day of the module.
The course is designed for lawyers, in-house counsel and other professionals interested in international dispute resolution.
To obtain a CAS in Arbitration, participants are required to:
- Attend and actively participate in four modules
- Pass a written examination at the beginning of module 2
- Submit a research paper
Excellent research papers may be selected for publication in the "Selected Papers on International Arbitration" series edited by the Academic Council of the SAA.

I had the honour and privilege to be invited for teaching assignments to the SAA courses over the last 5 years. Whilst this was only a 1-day engagement each, I was positively surprised by the interaction and the feedback from the students that I got acquainted with on this very day. Each group is diverse. However, each group and the student are challenging. The SAA format with practitioners giving their insight on various aspects is probably the most important factor for choosing the SAA for a continued education.
